Shianbashi: Nagasaki City’s Leading Entertainment District
“Shall I go on, or turn back? — Shianbashi”
Long ago, when the Maruyama pleasure quarter existed, it is said that a bridge stood at what is now the entrance to Shianbashi Yokocho — a bridge where people would ponder (think about) whether to go on or turn back.
The shopping street that flourished beside that bridge is today’s Shianbashi Yokocho.
As of August 2020, 64 shops are members of the Shianbashi Yokocho Association.
It is characterized by an old-fashioned, atmospheric townscape lined with all kinds of shops — restaurants, snack bars, clubs, bars, convenience stores, karaoke venues, retail shops, liquor stores, and more.

The archway of Shianbashi Yokocho is also a well-known feature, and the sight of Suntory Jim Beam lanterns lined up along it is truly spectacular.
